Clustering according to urolithin metabotype explains the interindividual variability in the improvement of cardiovascular risk biomarkers in overweight-obese individuals consuming pomegranate: A randomized clinical trial.

After the higher extract dose, several cholesterol-related markers improved only in participants with urolithin metabotype B. The finding supports the possibility that gut-microbial metabolism helps explain why pomegranate studies produce different results between people.

Direct supplementation with Urolithin A overcomes limitations of dietary exposure and gut microbiome variability in healthy adults to achieve consistent levels across the population.

Only about 40% of participants converted pomegranate-juice precursors into detectable urolithin A after intake. Producers differed in gut-microbiome features, supporting genuine variation in the ability to make this metabolite from food.
