Separate the movement from the surface
A squat is a movement pattern. Floor sitting is a resting position. Getting down to and up from the floor is a functional task that combines leg strength, power, balance, mobility, coordination, and confidence.
Those capacities matter for independence and for recovering after some falls. But simply choosing the floor instead of a chair has not been tested as a life-extension intervention.
Why practice the squat pattern
A scalable squat strengthens the hips and legs through a task used in daily life. Depth is individual: hip anatomy, ankle mobility, pain, balance, and training history all affect what is comfortable and safe.
- Start with a chair, rail, or counter for control if needed.
- Use a pain-free depth you can own without collapsing or holding your breath.
- Progress range, repetitions, and load gradually.
- A partial supported squat is still useful training.
What the floor-rise studies show
In selected middle-aged and older cohorts, people who could sit on and rise from the floor with less support had better survival. The test is informative because it bundles several capacities and aspects of health.
That same bundling creates confounding. The studies do not show that practicing a floor-rise test, deep squatting, or spending more time seated on the floor causes longer life.
Floor sitting does not cancel sedentary time
If you remain still, floor sitting is still sedentary behavior. Its potential practical advantage is that changing positions and getting down and up can add movement variety. The evidence-based target remains reducing long uninterrupted sitting and moving regularly.
