Beetroot / nitrate

The short answer

Improving exercise economy or aerobic performance in some recreationally active adults.

Evidence and scope
Conditional or population-specific

This status does not grade the ingredient for every goal, outcome, or person.

Important limitation
Results vary in highly trained athletes and do not establish longer life.
Before deciding
Can lower blood pressure and interact with nitrate or blood-pressure medicines.

01 / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Dose, absorption, and combinations

These are indication-specific reference or studied ranges—not a personalized prescription. Start with the objective, then check the form, label, medicines, and health conditions.

Reference range by objective
Endurance exerciseAbout 5–9 mmol nitrate 2–3 hours before exercise

Reference or studied range—not a personalized prescription. The product label or a clinician may specify a different dose.

Dose source

More is not automatically better. A clinician or product label may specify a different amount.

Absorption / solubilityWater-soluble

Water-soluble or readily water-dispersible. This does not mean excess is always harmless.

How it is commonly taken

Avoid antibacterial mouthwash around dosing because oral bacteria help nitrate conversion.

Do not combine casually

Blood-pressure medicines, hypotension, kidney disease, and high-oxalate products require review.

Dose and use source

Dose and use links lead to primary or official source material. Search links are discovery tools, not proof that every returned paper applies.

What the research says

We keep supportive, mixed, negative, safety, and contextual findings together. The headline never replaces the underlying papers.

134unique primary studies represented
2,054unique participants represented

These are audited counts for this JIVANA collection, not search-result totals. Participants are counted once when multiple papers use the same cohort; review papers are not added again to participant totals.

Effects of beetroot juice on blood pressure in hypertension according to European Society of Hypertension Guidelines

Clinic systolic pressure fell by about 5.3 mmHg, but diastolic and 24-hour measures did not clearly improve. Certainty was low and heterogeneity was moderate to high.

Study design and methods
Design
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials
Population
349 adults with clinical hypertension
Intervention
Nitrate-rich beetroot juice providing 200–800 mg nitrate/day versus placebo, water, or no intake
Outcome
Clinic, diastolic, and 24-hour blood pressure

Funding or conflict note: The authors declared no competing interests.

Factors that Moderate the Effect of Nitrate Ingestion on Exercise Performance in Adults

The pooled performance effect was statistically significant but very small. Effects were more apparent with beetroot or high-nitrate foods, during 2–10 minute efforts, and under specific timing and dose conditions.

Study design and methods
Design
Systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression of 123 randomized studies
Population
1,705 healthy adults in exercise-performance trials
Intervention
Inorganic nitrate from beetroot juice, nitrate salts, or high-nitrate diets versus placebo
Outcome
Exercise performance and moderators

No effect of nitrate-rich beetroot juice on microvascular function and blood pressure in younger and older individuals

Despite increased urinary nitrate, a single dose did not improve blood pressure or microvascular function in either age group; no adverse events were reported.

Study design and methods
Design
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study
Population
25 younger (18–35) and older (55+) adults
Intervention
One dose of beetroot juice providing 6.4 mmol nitrate or nitrate-depleted juice
Outcome
Blood pressure and microvascular endothelial function

Funding or conflict note: The authors declared no competing interests. This short pilot is excluded from aggregate totals to keep the broad synthesis primary.

Dietary nitrate provides sustained blood pressure lowering in hypertensive patients

Blood pressure fell across all three measurement settings over four weeks and the intervention was well tolerated. This small phase 2 result is represented in the later hypertension meta-analysis.

Study design and methods
Design
Randomized, phase 2, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Population
68 treated or untreated adults with hypertension
Intervention
Nitrate-rich beetroot juice 250 mL/day or nitrate-depleted beetroot juice
Outcome
Clinic, ambulatory, and home blood pressure; endothelial function and arterial stiffness

Funding or conflict note: Funded by the British Heart Foundation; excluded from totals because it is represented in the 2024 hypertension meta-analysis.

04 / EXPERT CONTEXT

Expert context—not evidence

Expert positions are dated context—not scientific evidence. They never raise the evidence status or become consensus by repetition.

No direct, source-verified endorsement is currently recorded. Research authorship or discussion alone is not treated as endorsement.

Educational information only—not medical advice. Product quality, dose, medicines, pregnancy, and kidney or liver disease can materially change safety.
