A Systematic Risk Assessment and Meta-Analysis on the Use of Oral β-Alanine Supplementation

Paresthesia was the only consistently reported side effect and was much more likely than with placebo. Available study-duration data did not show broader harm, but they do not establish indefinite long-term safety.

β-alanine supplementation to improve exercise capacity and performance

The overall effect was small. Benefits were more apparent for exercise capacity than real-world performance, and depended on exercise duration and modality.

Comparison of Two β-Alanine Dosing Protocols on Muscle Carnosine Elevations

Both regimens increased muscle carnosine, but neither clearly improved the fatigue test. The sustained-release formulation produced no detected group difference in paresthesia in this small short trial.
