Comparison of calcium citrate and calcium carbonate absorption after three types of bariatric surgery

Citrate produced slightly higher serum calcium exposure and peak levels, greater urinary calcium, and a larger PTH decline than carbonate. These short pharmacokinetic differences do not establish superior bone or fracture outcomes.

Calcium Citrate Versus Calcium Carbonate in Chronic Hypoparathyroidism

Both forms maintained similar serum calcium and did not differ on the primary calcium-oxalate index. Citrate lowered urinary oxalate and caused less constipation, but the short study did not establish fewer kidney stones.

Comparison of the absorption of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Citrate produced statistically higher serum calcium exposure and a stronger PTH response than carbonate. Absolute serum differences were small, the sample was tiny, and no clinical bone outcome was tested.

Calcium absorption and achlorhydria

Fasting carbonate absorption was markedly impaired with achlorhydria, while citrate absorption was preserved. Taking carbonate with a normal breakfast restored absorption, so the result supports a meal and stomach-acid distinction rather than universal citrate superiority.
