The 2026 resistance-training update puts consistency ahead of complexity

ACSM's first major resistance-training guidance update in 17 years clarifies what most adults need to start and which details matter only for specific goals.

Affected claim

Moving from no resistance training to a consistent program produces the largest practical gain; advanced methods are optional for general health.

Previous position

Strength work was already a healthy-aging foundation, but consumer guidance often overemphasized a perfect program, equipment choice, or training to failure.

New evidence reviewed

The 2026 ACSM Position Stand synthesized 137 systematic reviews representing more than 30,000 participants. It emphasizes regular training of all major muscle groups at least twice weekly, while treating load, volume, and speed as goal-specific variables. Bands, bodyweight, machines, and free weights can all work; training to failure and complex periodization are not consistently necessary for the average healthy adult.

What changed

JIVANA now leads with a repeatable twice-weekly pattern and explicitly labels heavier loads or higher volume as tools for defined strength or muscle-growth goals—not entry requirements.

What did not change

Programs still need to fit current ability, symptoms, safety, enjoyment, and recovery. The update does not make one routine best for every adult or every clinical condition.

What this changes in practice

Choose a form of resistance training you can repeat, cover the major muscle groups, and build gradually. Add specialized loading only when it serves a named goal and remains sustainable.

Limits and uncertainty

The guidance addresses healthy adults and summarizes reviews with varied programs and outcomes. People with pain, recent injury, significant symptoms, or clinical restrictions need an appropriately adapted starting point.
