Effectiveness of whey protein supplementation on muscle strength and physical performance of older adults

Whey plus resistance exercise produced a small lower-body strength advantage, but handgrip, walking, timed-up-and-go, lean mass, and fat mass did not improve overall. Appendicular muscle mass was based on only two heterogeneous trials.

Effects of whey proteins and carbohydrates on the efficacy of resistance training in elderly people

Training improved outcomes, but whey did not add gains in lean mass, strength, walking, or timed-up-and-go versus carbohydrate. Adequate baseline intake materially limits claims that every trainee benefits from extra whey.

Whey protein supplementation during resistance training augments lean body mass

Lean-mass gain was greater with whey (3.3 kg) than carbohydrate (2.3 kg) or soy (1.8 kg), while fat-mass change did not differ. The modest trial conflicts with later leucine-matched evidence and does not isolate whether total dose, leucine, or protein source drove the difference.
